Bad Advice

There is a story in the Bible of a man named Job. Job was doing pretty good by God when his life took a drastic turn for the worse.  We have a behind the scenes understanding that this is the devil’s handiwork, and he has God’s permission to do it all!

When Job was searching for truth in the midst of this turmoil, his friends, his council, and even his wife had some advice for him: “Curse God and die!”

Job’s got a pretty tragic tale but it turns out God was using his trials for glory and it was a darn good thing Job didn’t take the earthly advice. Clearly that message wasn’t for Job from God. Job could’ve easily taken it and run with it, but Job remained faithful to God’s advice instead.

I don’t like this lesson. I want to believe that my friends and family will always speak truth to me and that I will do the same for them. But we will fail each other.

Today, a Christian social media site I follow posted something that could have very easily been direction to me in my situation. I threw out a quick prayer: “God, is this for me?”

It was a Christian site, but this message was not for me from God. I could’ve easily taken it and run with it, but God has other advice I need to remain faithful to instead.

A trusted mentor who knows I am in a time of waiting gave me advice to move forward. Again I prayed: “God, is this what I should do?”

Sure, God speaks to us through many people and avenues. But the devil can use our trust in people as a weakness and he can trip us up.  Take note from Job, good advice can only always be found from God. Fact check with the Big Man before proceeding; Listen to His advice and remain faithful.
